The UK has beaten its previous record for longest spell of generating electricity without relying on burning coal. Over the Easter weekend, the UK enjoyed coal free electricity for the longest spell since 1882 - 192 hours.
But since then, the National Grid Electricity System Operator has confirmed another longer streak. The new record has stretched beyond 300 hours now. As of this afternoon, the coal-free streak had extended 13 days!
Julian Leslie, head of national control at National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO). “We believe that by 2025 we will be able to fully operate Great Britain’s electricity system with zero carbon.”
